Hot stone massage at Elysium Spa combines heated basalt stones with classic European massage strokes to deliver deep muscle warmth and full-body release. The therapist uses smooth volcanic stones heated to 50–55°C as both an extension of their hands and as resting weights on key muscle groups. The session lasts 60 or 90 minutes on the HC floor of Atana Hotel in Barsha Heights. Prices: 60 min — 630 AED, 90 min — 950 AED. Particularly effective for chronic muscle tension, cold-weather stiffness, and clients who prefer warmth-based therapy over pressure-based work. Book +971 58 507 2173 or Telegram.
How Hot Stone Massage Works
The therapist heats smooth basalt stones in a temperature-controlled water bath to between 50 and 55 degrees Celsius — warm enough to penetrate muscle, cool enough to be comfortable on the skin. Some stones are placed on key meridian points along the spine and warm the muscles passively while the therapist works on other areas. Other stones are held in the hand and used as an extension of the therapist's palm to deliver smooth, heated gliding strokes. The heat reaches deeper into muscle than hand pressure alone, which makes hot stone particularly effective for chronic tension that has not responded to lighter techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the stones too hot? Will they burn me?
No. The stones are heated to 50–55 degrees Celsius in a controlled water bath, a temperature warm enough to penetrate muscle but well below anything that could cause skin damage. The therapist tests each stone on the back of their hand before placing it on your skin, and confirms with you at the first contact. If at any point a stone feels too warm — which is rare — say so and the therapist will switch it for a cooler one immediately. The placement stones rest on top of a layer of towel rather than directly on the skin in most spots, which further moderates the contact temperature. Heat sensitivity, recent sunburn, or skin conditions like eczema should be declared during intake so the protocol can be adjusted. The temperature is consistent throughout the session — we use a thermostatically controlled water bath rather than a simple warmer — so the last stone of a 90-minute session is exactly the same warmth as the first.
What kind of stones do you use?
We use basalt stones — smooth volcanic rock with high iron content, which gives them excellent heat retention. Basalt is the standard choice for professional hot stone massage worldwide because the stones hold their heat consistently through a 60- or 90-minute session, and the smooth surface from natural weathering means there are no rough edges. Our stones come in graduated sizes from small palm-held pieces to larger placement stones for the back and legs. Between sessions, every stone is sanitised in the water bath at therapeutic temperature, which both heats them for the next session and ensures hygiene. The stones are not used cold or at room temperature. Each set is inspected weekly for chips or cracks and retired well before any roughness develops, because a stone that loses its mirror-smooth surface stops gliding cleanly and starts catching on the skin.
Is hot stone massage suitable in summer?
Yes. The cabin is air-conditioned and the stones are applied locally rather than warming the whole body, so the experience is comfortable year-round. In summer specifically, many clients find that the focused warmth on tight muscle is actually a welcome relief from the over-cooled environments of Dubai offices and homes, where air-conditioning creates chronic muscle tension in the back and shoulders. The contrast — cool ambient air, focused warmth on the muscle — is part of the therapeutic effect. If you are concerned about the temperature, the therapist can adjust the cabin air-conditioning, dim the lighting, and pace the session to keep you comfortable throughout. Booking a late-evening Hot Stone session after a day outdoors at a beach club or pool is particularly effective — the body is already warm and the muscles respond faster to the stones than they would on a cool morning.
How is hot stone different from deep tissue?
Deep tissue reaches deep muscle layers through firm sustained pressure applied with hands, forearms, elbows, and knuckles. Hot stone reaches deep muscle layers through heat — the warmth penetrates further than pressure alone can in the same time, but at a gentler sensation. For chronic muscle tension, both techniques are effective; the choice depends on your preference. Clients who find deep tissue too intense often respond well to hot stone, getting comparable results with a more comfortable session. Clients who specifically want firm hands-on work tend to prefer deep tissue. A third option, popular at Elysium Spa, is to combine both — book a Signature Ritual which uses both heated stones and deep-tissue technique in a single 90-minute session. The Signature opens with a Hot Stone phase to soften the muscle, then transitions into targeted deep tissue, then closes with stones again to even out the body — the order is the key to its effect.
Can I get a hot stone facial as part of the session?
Hot stone is delivered as a full-body massage at Elysium Spa rather than as a facial-only treatment, but the protocol includes time on the head, neck, and shoulders — the areas most relevant to facial tension. Smaller stones are sometimes used on the temples, jawline, and the muscles around the eyes during the head-and-neck portion, which produces a similar de-stressing effect to a dedicated facial. If you are specifically looking for facial treatments, the Signature Ritual offers a longer multi-technique session that includes more time on the face and head. For dedicated facial-only treatments, those are not currently on our menu. The head-and-neck portion of a Hot Stone session is typically 8 to 12 minutes inside the 60-minute version and 15 to 20 minutes inside the 90-minute version, which is enough time to address the jaw, temples, and scalp tension that desk workers commonly carry.
How soon will I feel the benefit?
Most clients feel the benefit during the session itself — the warmth produces visible muscle softening within the first ten to fifteen minutes, and the cumulative effect over 60 minutes is significant relaxation across the whole back and shoulders. Post-session, the warmth-induced softening lasts approximately 24 to 48 hours, similar to deep tissue but with less of the post-treatment soreness that can follow firm pressure work. For chronic tension issues, a single session is rarely enough to fully resolve — plan a sequence of three to four weekly or fortnightly sessions for a complete reset, after which monthly maintenance keeps the muscles loose. Sleep quality typically improves on the night of the session. Several of our regulars specifically book Hot Stone on Sunday evenings to reset before the working week, finding that a single session before Monday makes the upper-back tension that usually builds across Sunday afternoon vanish before it has time to settle.
